“I know soon-to-be veterans are out there, but where can I find them?” is a common question many employers ask.

To help employers answer this question, the Transition to Veterans Program Office (TVPO) Private and Public Engagement (PPE) team travels the country to meet with organizations large and small to discuss the value of hiring veterans.

“We often get questions from companies on how they can hire and retain veterans,” said Adam Cyr, a TVPO private and public engagement specialist. “By engaging with them we can begin to help make those connections and fill in the gaps.”

With over 250,000 service members from 180 worldwide military installations transitioning from the military to the civilian world each year, there is pipeline of talent companies can tap into.

One of the ways employers can connect with transitioning service members and veterans is through Hiring Our Heroes (HOH) career summits.

HOH, a program of the U.S. Chamber of Commerce Foundation, launched in March 2011 as a nationwide initiative to help veterans, transitioning service members, and military spouses find meaningful employment opportunities.

“HOH career summits offer endless opportunities to both employers and transitioning service members and veterans. There are a series of town hall-style discussions, networking receptions, employment workshops, and a hiring fair,” said Cyr. “Furthermore, the real value of the HOH career summits is that employers get to come on to the installation and get behind the firewall where service members are kept. This allows employers to not only make connections with transitioning service members, but transition staff and other leaders on base.”

Marnie Holder, director of transition summits and virtual events, HOH, recently briefed Transition Assistance Program (TAP) interagency partners about the success of HOH events. To date, more than 35,000 veterans and military spouses have obtained employment opportunities through HOH events. More than 7,000 companies of all sizes have committed to hire 710,000 veterans and military spouses as part of the Hiring 500,000 Heroes campaign. Of those commitments, there have been more than 505,000 confirmed hires.

“Transition Summits are designed to introduce active duty service members, military spouses and veterans to the vast array of resources available as they pursue meaningful employment and challenging careers beyond their service to the nation,” said Holder.

HOH Career Summits put tools and information directly into service member’s hands, and connect them directly to the employers that are dedicated and interested in hiring them.
