MARINE CORPS BASE CAMP LEJEUNE, N.C. – Organizers representing Trees for Troops will kick off the holiday season on Marine Corps Base Camp Lejeune by distributing Christmas trees to service members and their families. The event is scheduled to start Dec. 4, at 7:30 a.m. at the Paradise Point golf course.
For the last 14 years, Trees for Troops and the Christmas Spirit Foundation have delivered farm grown trees to military families on installations throughout the United States, according to their website.
“This year we are doing it a little differently,” said Yolanda Mayo, MCCS coordinator. “We will have military police directing traffic into lines where Marines will strap the trees to their cars so they never have to get out of their vehicles.”
Also new this year are new qualifications to receive a tree. In the past, it has been one Christmas tree per vehicle, however that has changed this year. You can get as many trees as you have people with a Department of Defense Identification Card.
“We are doing this so people can carpool with someone who has a larger vehicle so that they can get a tree for their family as well,” Mayo said. “If you have four people with ID cards in one truck, for example, we will give four trees.”
Historically, this is a very popular event and it is recommended that families show up as early as possible, as trees will only be given out while supplies last.
While Camp Lejeune did not receive Christmas trees last year, the community is looking forward to the event for this holiday season.
“We are very excited to have been selected by Trees for Troops to be one of the bases to receive trees this year,” Mayo said. “This is their way of giving back to the community, and it couldn’t have come at a better time for our service members and their families.”
