VIRGINIA BEACH, Va. – Electronics Technician 2nd Class Shelby Salpas, a native of Charleston, South Carolina, currently serves as a system administrator at Information Warfare Training Command (IWTC) Virginia Beach.
She enlisted in the Navy at the age of 17 in March of 2010. After completing basic training at Recruit Training Command Great Lakes, she went onto attend Electronics Technician “A” School, followed by “C” school.
Upon her graduation from school, she reported to her first duty station aboard USS San Antonio (LPD 17) out of Norfolk, Virginia. During her 2013 deployment, she served as the area supervisor, work center supervisor, combat systems officer of the watch, and officer of the deck. In 2014, she completed her final deployment which entailed Fleet Week in New York City and Baltic Sea operations with allied forces, to include port visits to Poland, Germany, and Iceland, as well as crossing the Arctic Circle.
In 2016, Salpas reported to IWTC Virginia Beach, where she is a system administrator, responsible for providing support to over 280 military and civilian staff, and 6,500 students each year. Her additional duties include the Defense Priorities and Allocations Systems manager for the N6 department and engraving petty officer for the command.
Salpas comes from an extensive line of family members serving in the Navy. Her mother retired in 2003, and her father and stepfather are both currently serving in the Navy.
“I enjoy being in the Navy,” shared Salpas. “It helps you grow up and learn to do things on your own. It also gives you an instant family. I would not be who I am today if I had not joined the Navy. Being a system administrator was originally out of my comfort zone, but I am very happy and proud of how much I have learned and how much I now enjoy it.”
IWTC Virginia Beach currently offers 65 courses of instruction in information technology, cryptology, and intelligence with an instructor and support staff of 280 military, civilian, and contract members who train over 6,500 students every year at five training sites in the Hampton Roads area. It is one of four school houses for Center for Information Warfare Training and also oversees learning sites at Jacksonville and Mayport, Florida; Kings Bay, Georgia; and Groton, Connecticut to continue aligning IW community training.
With four schoolhouse commands, two detachments, and training sites throughout the United States and Japan, CIWT is recognized as Naval Education and Training Command’s top learning for the past two years. Training over 21,000 students every year, CIWT delivers trained information warfare professionals to the Navy and joint services.
