    NEWPORT, R.I. — John Babb, of Somerset, Massachusetts, lead customer advocate at the Naval Undersea Warfare Center (NUWC) Division Newport, has been selected for the position of deputy technical director – technical excellence.

    Babb, who leads several efforts focused on technologies, concepts and knowledgeable personnel for the next generation nuclear attack submarine platform (SSN-X) – the follow-on to the Virginia-class submarine – joined NUWC Newport in 1982. During his 36 years of service, he has led projects focused on advancements in undersea warfare including the Improved Flex-Hose Torpedo Wire Guidance System, unmanned undersea vehicle launch and recovery, early Virginia-class submarine design efforts, Ohio-class guided missile submarine (SSGN) design, acquisition and fielding, and Columbia-class submarine early acquisition.

    Babb has worked with many of NUWC’s customers over the years as technical program manager or customer advocate and is knowledgeable in Newport’s technical business. Babb’s educational background includes a bachelor’s degree in ocean engineering from Purdue University and master’s degrees in ocean engineering and mechanical engineering/applied mechanics from the University of Rhode Island.

    NUWC Division Newport, part of the Naval Sea Systems Command (NAVSEA), is one of two divisions of the Naval Undersea Warfare Center. NUWC Division Newport’s mission is to provide research, development, test and evaluation, engineering and fleet support for submarines, autonomous underwater systems, undersea offensive and defensive weapons systems, and countermeasures. NUWC’s other division is located in Keyport, Washington.
