MARINE CORPS AIR STATION IWAKUNI, Japan (Oct. 24, 2018) - U.S. Marine Cpl. Caleb Warren, an aviation operation specialist with Marine All-Weather Fighter Attack Squadron 225, rescued two civilians while manning his post as the duty noncommissioned officer (DNCO) at a hotel near Tumon Bay, Guam, Oct. 8, 2018.

Marines with VMFA (AW) 225 took part of a series of exercises and unit level training at Anderson Air Force Base, Guam. During one of the nights in Guam, Cpl. Warren was standing duty when a car crashed into a tree.

“While I was taking charge of my post, I heard loud squeals of car tires and then a loud crash outside,” Warren said. “Knowing that a car must have crashed I decided to leave my post to investigate the situation.”

“Upon arriving to the car, I saw smoke all around the vehicle,” Warren said. ”I immediately shouted to Mark, an employee of the hotel; to call 911. I feared the vehicle may catch fire, so I opened the driver’s side door and assisted the two occupants.”

The driver sustained minimal injuries but the passenger’s legs were wedged under the dashboard and had a significant injury. Warren worked to remove the occupants and get them to a safe distance from the smoking vehicle. While waiting for emergency services, Warren rendered first aid to the passengers.

“When seeing the accident and seeing smoke everywhere I just knew I had to do something,” said Warren. “I couldn’t just stand by and let anything bad happen to the victims of the crash.”
Bravery, courage and commitment are just a few heroic traits Warren displayed when reacting to the car accident.

“Life in general does not fully prepare anyone for that situation,” Warren said. “My heart sank and I couldn’t imagine how I would feel or what I would do if it was my family in that situation. The Marine Corps has widened my knowledge of first aid and has given me skills and values that I hold close to me. The Marine Corps definitely set me up for success in this situation.”

Warren received the Navy & Marine Corps Achievement Medal for his actions in Guam.
