Sailors, assigned to the aircraft carrier USS Theodore Roosevelt (CVN 71), volunteered at Coronado Beach, December 3.

For two hours Sailors spent the morning cleaning the beach and clearing it of debris.

“We did something meaningful today by showing support and that we care about the city we live in,” said Lt. Long Nguyen. “It’s important that we show we are invested in our community and we do our part.”

Community relations work not only helps the community, it can also be beneficial for the Sailors themselves.

“It’s really a win, win,” said Nguyen. “We helped our community and our Sailors got to enjoy a beautiful San Diego morning at the beach. I think it’s really good for Sailors to break the monotony and get out here in the sun and change up the pace.”

Sailors enjoyed themselves while giving back and found the experience to be beneficial.

“I’m glad I got the opportunity to help my local community and, at the same time, enjoy the beach,” said Interior Communications Electrician Seaman Juan Garza. “I would recommend Sailors do more beautification projects to enjoy the scenery, help the community, and it’s just a good overall experience.”

Sailors enjoyed working as a team while helping clean Coronado Beach.

“It was nice to work with my shipmates in a different environment,” said Garza. “I feel like it definitely increased rapport to do something fun off the ship.”
