Anchorage conducted repairs and an agricultural vehicle wash down and inspection. The port visit also offered Sailors and U.S. Marines an opportunity to enjoy Spanish culture and cuisine.
“It‘s a very rare opportunity for a San Diego based ship to venture to the eastern Atlantic,” said Capt. Dennis Jacko, commanding officer of Anchorage. “We took advantage of the port call to resupply while enjoying everything that southern Spain has to offer.”
While in port, Sailors and U.S. Marines conducted an agriculture wash down of vehicles to prevent foreign contaminants, animal and plant pests from transferring back home. Wash downs are the U.S. Navy’s effort to preserve the native ecosystem.
In addition to conducting repairs and washing vehicles, the Morale, Welfare and Recreation committee coordinated tours to Gibraltar, Sevilla, Cadiz, Jerez, Ronda, and even a canyon descending tour in the mountains.
“We worked hard over the last several months,” said Lt. j.g. Peter Severs. “It was necessary to repair critical pieces of equipment, and at the same time we could enjoy adventures like descending down a canyon and exploring the Seville Cathedral.”
Anchorage and embarked 13th MEU are on a regularly scheduled deployment to the U.S. 6th Fleet area of operations as a crisis response force in support of regional partners as well as to promote U.S. national security interests in Europe and Africa.
