SAN DIEGO – Marine Corps Capt. Michael Asprocolas, with Information Warfare Training Command (IWTC) San Diego, was recognized as Naval Education and Training Command’s (NETC) 2018 Officer Instructor of the Year, Dec. 5.
The award was presented to Asprocolas by Rear Adm. Kyle Cozad, NETC commander, at the National Naval Aviation Museum in Pensacola, Florida. Asprocolas is the first Marine to receive the award in its history.
The award ceremony was held on the same day that the federal government observed a national day of mourning after the death of President George H. W. Bush. One of the planes that President Bush piloted during World War II hangs in the museum, and Asprocolas offered that he was “especially cognizant of the sacrifices made by President Bush,” and is “proud to a part of the same fighting force that has developed leaders like him.”
Asprocolas hails from Asbury Park, New Jersey and is one of two Marines serving at IWTC San Diego. He currently serves as the Amphibious Ready Group and Marine Expeditionary Unit Intelligence Operations Course division officer.
When asked about his reaction to winning the award, he replied, “This recognition is truly a reflection of all the great work being performed by the incredible team at IWTC San Diego. I’m very fortunate to be part of this incredible group, and look forward to continuing our mission of sending fully prepared Information Warfare professionals to the fleet.”

Errol Laumann, commanding officer of IWTC San Diego. “Not only is this the first time a Marine Corps officer has received this award, he is a first-rate example of the dedicated and talented cadre of instructors we have here training the fleet in information warfare operations. "
IWTC San Diego, as part of the Center for Information Warfare Training, provides a continuum of training to Navy and joint service personnel that prepares them to conduct information warfare across the full spectrum of military operations.
With four schoolhouse commands, two detachments, and training sites throughout the United States and Japan, CIWT is recognized as Naval Education and Training Command’s top learning center for the past two years. Training over 21,000 students every year, CIWT delivers trained information warfare professionals to the Navy and joint services. CIWT also offers more than 200 courses for cryptologic technicians, intelligence specialists, information systems technicians, electronics technicians, and officers in the information warfare community.
