CAMP LESTER, OKINAWA, Japan — Approximately 20 Camp Lester Middle School students participated in a U.S. Marine Corps Combat Fitness Test on Camp Lester December 8, 2018.
Marines with Headquarters and Support Battalion, Marine Corps Installations Pacific-Marine Corps Base Camp Butler, Japan volunteered for the event. The students ran the CFT to immerse themselves in what a majority of their active duty parents do as part of annual Marine Corps training requirements. The CFT consists of an 880-yard sprint, a maximum set of ammunition can lifts against two minute's time, and an obstacle course.
“The test gives the students who have parents in the military a better appreciation for part of what their parents must achieve,” says Mike Carrell, the physical education teacher at Camp Lester Middle School. “All of the students are grateful for the Marines who give their time to provide them the opportunity to perform the test. It’s a wonderful example of the partnership between Lester Middle School and the Marine Corps.”
The test proved to be very rigorous for the students.
“The CFT does benefit more than just their physical fitness,” says Carrell. “It becomes a test of their mental toughness.”
In fiscal year 2018, Marines with MCIPAC Okinawa, Japan, conducted approximately 500 volunteer events and dedicated more than 26,000 hours giving back to the local and U.S. community.
