WIESBADEN, Germany -- Col. Steven Birchfield, Deputy U.S. Army Europe Command Surgeon, presents awards to members of the German Navy who were instrumental in ensuring the success of the International Combat Live Saver Course held at Clay Kaserne for the past four years as well as German leadership and medic proficiency badges.

The German Navy officers and non-commissioned officers were awarded the U.S. Meritorious Service Medal and the Army Commendation Medal for their work building and advancing the strong bonds between the German Armed Forces, U.S. Army Europe and the NATO Alliance.

“There is no operation where Germany goes alone, therefore it is important to train in early stages to operate together," said KorvetternKapitän Dirk Matheis, German Navy. “Besides the training benefits it is also very important to get to know the multinationals taking part in the training.”

The results speak for themselves as over 1,500 students alone were trained at the German and U.S. Army lead International Combat Lifesaver Course. They also set in motion a semiannual exchange program between Army Europe NCOs and the German Navy Petty Officer School. The program will provide invaluable opportunities to exchange trainers and help build networks of understanding and professionalism between the Armies.

“We are very lucky to have high demand, high quality training with the International Combat Life Saver Course,” said Col. Steven Birchfield, Deputy, U.S. Army Europe Command Surgeon. “We bring around expert instructors from all over international community — and these guys are the very best paramedics, police paramedics, firefighters — and we all come together to learn skills from one another to be better in combat. It’s important to recognize our partners, allies and those folks who help put it all together, provide us with the expertise in training so that we as a community can be better for it.”

The next International Combat Lifesaver Course is scheduled for 11 – 14 February 2019 and there are currently 50 soldiers and police scheduled to attend the course at Clay Kaserne in Wiesbaden, Germany. Units interested in sending soldiers to participate should contact Maj. Antonio Chang at DSN 53-0058 or civilian +49 611-143-537-0058. Registration deadline for this course is January 15, 2019.
