MARY ESTHER, Fla. – The rain didn’t stop the Special Forces Association Chapter 7 from hosting its 40th annual Jingle Bell Jog at the Santa Rosa Mall, Dec. 1, 2018.
This is the seventh year that the run has been held in Northwest Florida. When 7th Special Forces Group (Airborne) was located in Fort Bragg, North Carolina, the event was only unit oriented. Once the unit relocated to Eglin Air Force Base, Florida, the Jingle Bell Jog became a way to involve the local community in support of its military.
Over 400 participants were present for the run and the event also generated over $20,000.
All the money gathered from this event is used to support the families of 7th SFG(A) Soldiers who made the ultimate sacrifice.
The event included a five-kilometer run, or walk, and ten-kilometer run available for Soldiers, family, and community members to participate in. There was even a fun run just for the kids in attendance, where Santa Claus was waiting to high-five them at the finish line.
Volunteers and supporters were spread throughout the course, providing water and encouragement to the runners, who were dressed in their holiday best for the run.
The post-race festivities included food and drinks for everyone. Top finishers of various age groups were recognized with trophies, followed by a $500 raffle and drawing for other prizes. The most festive outfit was picked out by Johnny Moses, president of SFA7, with the help of the crowd.
“This event couldn’t be possible without the 7th SFG(A) command,” said Moses. “There were over 60 volunteers from the unit, along with family and community members. Even with the [rainy] weather, we had a great turnout.”
