KUNSAN AIR BASE, Republic of Korea -- The 8th Fighter Wing launched its Air Force Assistance Fund campaign March 26, and AFAF officials recently announced the results of the donations.
The 8th Fighter Wing collectively raised a total of $41,975.81, surpassing the wing’s overall goal of $37,174 by 113 percent.
The AFAF focuses on four charities: the Air Force Aid Society, the General and Mrs. Curtis E. LeMay Foundation, the Air Force Villages Charitable Foundation and the Air Force Enlisted Village. The four charities help Air Force active duty, retirees, Reserve and Air National Guard members in a variety of ways, to include aiding in emergencies, providing educational needs and helping secure a retirement home for Air Force widows or widowers in need of financial assistance.
Some Airmen will never have to use these charities, but due to unforeseen and unpredictable life events, one may find themselves waking up one day to tragic news like Master Sgt. Joshua Proffit, an Air Force Aid Society beneficiary from the 8th Civil Engineering Squadron.
“One day I got a call that my dad had a very significant stroke to the point where he became paralyzed on the right side of his body,” said Proffit. “At that point the Air Force Aid Society, through the Air Force Assistance Fund, had immediately funded me to go home and see him, as well as my wife and three kids at the time.
Every donation towards the AFAF goes towards a noble and helpful cause. AFAF campaigns teams from bases around the world all help in some way or another, even if you may never hear or see the results.
“Our goal was to serve others in a magnitude that was fueled by the Pride of the Wolf Pack,” said 1st Lt. Raven Jackson, 8th Security Forces Squadron plans and programs officer in charge. “The profound feeling of being able to make a difference in so many unknown individuals across the Air Force family was worth all the sweat and grind that was put in behind the scenes. Some Airman, dependent, or retiree will be able to receive that little extra support because the Air Force does, in fact, take care of their people.”
Although Airmen from across the base contributed to the 8th Fighter Wing’s successful campaign, two Wolf Pack groups in particular were recognized for their outstanding performance in raising money for the AFAF charities.
The 8th Medical Group, led by Master Sgt. Nonika Allen, dental flight chief, and the 8th Maintenance Group, led by Master Sgt. Michael Truitt, management analysis section chief, both surpassed their unit’s respective goals for fundraising and raised approximately 63.5 percent of the wing’s final fundraising total.
