Soldiers of the 184th Sustainment Command, Mississippi Army National Guard, assumed responsibility of daily sustainment operations throughout the Middle East on Dec. 29, 2018, commemorated by a transfer of authority ceremony Jan. 2, 2019.
Serving as the operational command post for the Ft. Knox-based 1st Theater Sustainment Command, the 184th manages the day-to-day sustainment operations theater wide — the unit’s doctrinal mission. It assumed responsibility from the Orlando-based 143d Sustainment Command, U.S. Army Reserve.
“I’ve got a great team,“ said Brig. Gen. Clint Walker, 184th commander. “We recognize that the sustainment mission here is dynamic and requires a team effort. We look forward to working with Army, Joint, Interagency and Multinational Forces, strategic partners, and enablers as we collectively provide sustainment support.”
The 1st TSC was charged with overall sustainment responsibilities in support of U.S. Central Command in 2006 and manages long terms aspects of the mission.
“Today’s transition of authority represents the tip of the spear of sustainment and logistical operations across this vast Central Command area of operations,“ said Maj. Gen. Flem B. “Donnie” Walker, Jr., 1st TSC commander. “The 143d ESC and 184th ESC epitomize the continued and vital contributions of both the Army Reserve and the Army National Guard forces in support of warfighters across the theater.”
The area of responsibility includes 20 countries, with four ongoing U.S. military operations, covering 4.5 million square miles, 550 million people, and 22 ethnic groups speaking 18 different languages.
A global sustainment provider, the 1st TSC supplies food, fuel, water, transportation, ammunition, building materials, and repair parts to ensure the warfighter can accomplish their mission. They manage the ports, flights, and customs points needed to keep people and equipment moving 24 hours a day, seven days a week. They also provide support in the areas of financial management, human resources, humanitarian aid distribution, host-nation engagements, and medical care for troops and civilians within the command.
"No matter the role — from commanding general to WO1 Paul Carpenter our newest Warrant Officer, to PFC Kayla Adams our most junior Soldier, every Soldier is important and their effort enables us to sustain the force" said Brig. Gen. Walker.
The 184th Sustainment Command is expected to remain on mission until September 2019.
