ROSECRANS AIR NATIONAL GUARD BASE, Mo.--U.S. Air Force Airman Shelby Ward is a finance technician assigned to the 139th Comptroller Flight, Missouri Air National Guard, who recently joined the wing.
“I was looking for a way to pay for college,” said Ward.
Ward said she was looking into joining the Army National Guard, but her friend, Airman 1st Class Ariel Switzer, who is in the Avionics Office with the 139th, recommended the Air National Guard in St. Joseph. After talking with Tech. Sgt. Jason Jones, a recruiter at the 139th, she enlisted into the wing in November 2017.
“Jones told me that the Air Force is like a family,” Ward said. “That convinced me to join.”
Ward is currently a student at Missouri Western State University working on a degree in finance, with the goal of becoming an officer. She is the first member of her family to join the military and her parents are very proud of that, she said.
