REDSTONE ARSENAL, Ala. (Jan. 3, 2018) – The Engineering Directorate of U. S. Army Research, Development, and Engineering Command, Aviation & Missile, also known as AMRDEC, will kick off the 2019 Army Emergency Relief campaign fundraiser with a Cutest Pet Contest.
Registration for contestants will run Jan. 9 - Feb. 22 and is open to any and all pets of all Team Redstone employees.
The ED Mission Assurance team came up with the Cutest Pet Contest as a way to support AER while showing off their fur-babies, according to Valerie Harris, ED’s Quality Management Division chief. She added that many of the team members are serious pet lovers and often talk about and share pictures of their pets.
“Supporting the Soldier is our first and foremost mission and that includes more than just providing weapon systems,” said Carol Holcomb, ED’s mission assurance director and active supporter of a local pet rescue center. “We felt like AER was the best non-profit to allow us to give back to those who sacrifice so much for us.”
The Army Emergency Relief program dates back to 1942 and provides financial emergency assistance to Soldiers and their families, both active and retired, in critical times of need. Eligible applicants can request interest-free loans, grants, or both, with no limit on how much can be requested. The program serves as an alternative for those who want to avoid high-interest loan options offered by other financial establishments who often target service members. In 2017, the AER campaign supported over 43,000 requests, providing over $69.7 million, in interest-free loans and grants across the Army.
Applications can be submitted through unit chains of command or directly through the Financial Readiness Program offices or AER staff representatives. Offices are located on all Army installations. The other services offer comparable programs (Air Force Aid Society, Navy-Marine Corps Relief Society and Coast Guard Mutual Assistance).
Over the next two years, Army National Guardsmen and Reservists will be able to request AER support with the fielding of the new online Integrated Personnel and Pay System, a system integrating personnel, pay and talent management capabilities.
The Redstone Arsenal AER Office is located in the Gen. John J. Pershing Community Welcome Center, Building 3443 Aerobee Road, across from One Stop. The office can be reached by calling Army Community Service at 256-876-5397. If unable to travel to an installation or if emergency relief is needed on a weekend, holiday, or after hours, contact the American Red Cross at 877-272-7337.
