As any enlisted Marine who went through the School of Infantry on the Camp Geiger will tell you, Marine Corps Air Station New River can be quite large if your only option is to walk. Starting on January 12, MCAS New River will offer a new way for Marines to get around the base.
MCAS New River has partnered with LimeBike, an alternative mobility company, to bring the company and its ride sharing vehicles to Camp Geiger and New River.
Starting off, LimeBike will offer traditional bicycles, as well as battery- assisted E-Bikes for a slightly higher fee. The bicycles cost one dollar to unlock and then an additional five cents per minute, while the e-bikes are one dollar to unlock and 15 cents per minute, according to their website.
In order to unlock the bikes, users must first download the Lime app to their phone. From there they can see the locations of all the vehicles aboard New River available to rent. Once the ride is finished, all you have to do is lock the bike via a built-in-lock, and leave it where it is.
While the LimeBikes do not technically fall under the category of motor vehicle, there are still a number of rules that Marines must follow while using the vehicles. There are no license or insurance requirements, however, the users must still wear helmets, as per the base order.
Additionally, the bikes are not allowed to be used on sidewalks and if using them after sundown, the rider must have a headlamp. The riders are still subject to the same rules of the road as a normal vehicle, including everything from obeying all traffic signs to driving while intoxicated laws, according to Capt. Frank P. Slaunwhite, the assistant operations officer for Security & Emergency Services Company, Marine Corps Installations East- Marine Corps Base Camp Lejeune.
While Lime has is typically been associated with college campuses and major cities, it has operated successfully aboard military bases on the West Coast. This is the first time that the company has expanded to an East Coast base. Lime also offers scooters in some locations, and will possibly bring them to MCAS New River, depending on the success with the bikes. More information on LimeBikes can be found at https://www.li.me.
