U.S. Army Soldiers of 1st Squadron, 7th Cavalry Regiment, 1st Armored Brigade Combat Team, 1st Cavalry Division conclude with the second phase of Exercise Combined Resolve in at Grafenworhr, Germany.
More than 5,500 service members from 16 nations joined for Combined Resolve XI at U.S. Army Europe's Grafenwoehr and Hohenfels training areas in Germany led by 7th Army Training Command from Nov. 26 - Dec. 14 and Jan. 14 - 25.
This hard, tough realistic training kept skills sharp learned throughout their Atlantic Resolve rotation across Europe improving the interoperability between U.S. Forces and their NATO allies and partners.
"Our entire training, individual, team, platoon and Bradley live fires prepared us for Combined Resolve," said U.S. Army 1st Lt. Alex Fumerelle, executive officer, assigned to Charlie Troop, 1 - 7 CAV.
The 1 - 7 CAV Soldiers took full advantage of the world-class facilities in Germany during phase one of Combined Resolve held in November and December 2018. Diesel engines rumbled and roared as armored vehicles from multiple countries roamed across the ranges as U.S. and allied and partner nations learned how to better serve together with one mission.
"It is good to understand how they work," said U.S. Army Pfc. Wyatt Tilton assigned to Headquarters Troop, 1 - 7 CAV.
Rain, snow, mud and ice proved no obstacle as the Soldiers from multiple nations patroled and engaged simulated targets in the rolling hills and forests of Hohenfels.
"I like what they (other countries soldiers) do, they roll up and just go," said Tilton.
Officers integrated their own forces with different countries spread over many miles and accomplish the mission. Staff officers studied maps, refined plans and issued orders to leaders in the field. Junior officers and noncommissioned officers carried out the guidance from headquarters and lead soldiers forward.
"it was a good chance to put into practice what we had learned," U.S. Army 1st Lt. Emily Leyland executive officer, assigned to Delta Troop, 1 - 7 CAV.
This not only improved skills at the Soldiers' level but highlighted the challenge of deploying thousands of Soldiers from multiple countries.
"We see how we fit into the brigade's big picture," said Leyland.
For some U.S. Soldiers it was a chance to train with new friends made from previous deployments during Atlantic Resolve. Several Ukrainian soldiers at Combined Resolve in Hohenfels had trained with 1 - 7 CAV in Lithuania earlier in 2018 as part of Atlantic Resolve.
"It is a lot easier the second time around, we have already built a relationship," said U.S. Army Capt. Gary Oakland, a fire support officer in the 1 - 7 CAV.
The final drills and live fire exercises are scheduled for Jan. 21 - 23. This is the last major exercise for Atlantic Resolve for the 1st ABCT. During Atlantic Resolve hundreds of 1 - 7 CAV Soldiers deployed to Poland, Slovakia, Lithuania, Hungary and Germany.
Hohenfels Training Area is home to more than 100 square kilometers of woodlands, hills and streams preparing units for any battlefield.
