EVERETT, Wash. – Information Warfare Training Site (IWTS) Pacific Northwest (PACNORWEST) hosted Naval Information Forces Force Master Chief David Carter, Jan. 17.

During his visit to Naval Station Everett, Carter had the opportunity to tour the base, attend a meet and greet with Sailors from various tenant commands onboard, and tour USS Momsen (DDG 92). The tour was led by Command Master Chief Jonathan Lamperth, Chief Sonar Technician (Surface) Jonathan Shedd, and Chief Intelligence Specialist Thomas Christie.

During the tour, Carter spoke with information warfare (IW) community Sailors about the important role they play within the fleet, the future of warfighting and their futures within the community.

The meet and greet provided area Sailors the opportunity to speak with one of the top leaders in the IW community about manning, leadership, training, and the future of the IW community.

Master Chief Information Systems Technician Kristopher Boyd, attached to Carrier Strike Group 11, and Chief Information Systems Technician William Barrick, attached to Afloat Training Group PACNORWEST, asked questions regarding the future of the information systems technician rating. Specifically, about the training of new accessions and the shape of the rating itself in the coming future.

Optimizing their success through training, giving future Sailors the chance to broaden their horizons and cover more aspects of the rating were the main focal points shared by Carter.

Carter then responded to Cryptologic Technician (Collection) 2nd Class Christopher Blackburn’s, with IWTS PACNORWEST, question about how his time at Naval Special Warfare Command shaped him into the leader he is today.

“It all came down to the experiences that came with the job and seizing the opportunities that the Navy was able to give me,” shared Carter.

Cryptologic Technician (Maintenance) 1st Class Russell Winter, attached to USS Momsen (DDG 92), asked how the new evaluations would affect first class petty officers during their chief selection boards.

Carter reassured that the selection boards would still work with set prerequisites and only the best and most qualified would be selected to wear the anchors.

IWTS PACNORWEST is a learning site under the Information Warfare Training Command (IWTC) San Diego. IWTC San Diego, as part of the Center for Information Warfare Training (CIWT), provides a continuum of training to Navy and joint service personnel that prepares them to conduct information warfare across the full spectrum of military operations.

With four schoolhouse commands, two detachments, and training sites throughout the United States and Japan, CIWT is recognized as Naval Education and Training Command’s top learning center for the past two years. Training over 21,000 students every year, CIWT delivers trained information warfare professionals to the Navy and joint services. CIWT also offers more than 200 courses for cryptologic technicians, intelligence specialists, information systems technicians, electronics technicians, and officers in the information warfare community.
