For many service members, leaving the military has unexpected emotional side effects. The overall unemployment rate for Marines is low, but there is still a large percentage of veterans not participating in the workforce. Marines getting out of the Marine Corps are faced with career decisions in the civilian sector. The Transition Readiness Seminar (TRS) is a program for all separating military personnel to give ownership of their transition from military to civilian lifestyle.
Microsoft Software & Systems Academy (MSSA) is a program provided by TRS that helps service members and veterans with critical career skills required for today’s growing technology industry.
U.S. Marine Corps gunnery sergeant and cybersecurity technician, Joshua Ladd, retired after 20 years in the service and accepted a position with Microsoft after completing a course with MSSA.
“Being able to participate in MSSA was something I was not expecting,” said Ladd. “Obviously the Marine Corps had offered me many opportunities, but I never realized that this was something available to us. There was nothing that was going to stop me from participating.”
MSSA provides an 18-week training for high-demand careers in cloud development, cloud administration, cybersecurity administration, or database and business intelligence administration. In addition to classroom and hands-on training, students build resumes and learn how to market themselves in a business setting by conducting practice interviews to include videotaping themselves speaking.
Not only do the students gain the skills and knowledge needed to be successful in a business environment, they are also guaranteed an interview for a full-time job with Microsoft or one of its hiring partners after completing the course.
“One of the great benefits of this program was they allow you to go through the hiring process to the very end,” said Ladd. “Through the course of this program, not just with Microsoft, but with 350 other companies, I am able to speak directly to a hiring manager. This academy takes us way ahead of the pack.”
As MSSA expands, Microsoft is increasing opportunity for the men and women who have served in the military with soft skills and an attitude to learn, Ladd said.
The Marine Corps helped Ladd find his voice, MSSA helped him transform his career.
