Naval Medical Center Portsmouth’s (NMCP) Coalition of Sailors Against Destructive Decisions (CSADD) committee hosted a Responsible Drinking Fair Jan. 30.
“January’s topic is responsible use of alcohol so we wanted to spread awareness on the effects of alcohol use, emphasize the conditions of drinking and driving and to remind people what alcohol does to the body,” said Hospitalman Fabian Reyes, CSADD vice president.
CSADD committee members handed out informational flyers that included information on driving alternatives, and things to do before, during and after drinking. They also provided an assessment questionnaire about recognizing signs of alcohol use disorder and resources available.
NMCP’s Drug and Alcohol Program Advisors (DAPA) assisted with the event, providing beer goggles for staff members to wear to show how drinking changes depth perception, and one reason why getting behind the wheel is a poor choice.
“Today we are giving out drinking and driving tips, along with a board presentation of the effects of alcohol, alternatives for driving and we are giving out tips on creating a plan, with assistance from DAPA,” Reyes said.
