    NAVSUP Weapon Systems Support

PHILADELPHIA (Jan. 18, 2019) – With appreciation and support, three Navy admirals visited Naval Supply Systems Command Weapon Systems Support (NAVSUP WSS) to thank the command and to punctuate the sense of urgency in aviation supply readiness. Vice Adm. DeWolfe Miller, Commander, Naval Air Forces (Air Boss), Vice Adm. Dean Peters, Commander of Naval Air Systems Command and Rear Adm. Michelle Skubic, NAVSUP Commander and 48thChief of the Navy Supply Corps, visited NAVSUP WSS leadership Jan. 14.  With the goal of further understanding NAVSUP WSS’s mission and the tools and capabilities currently being leveraged to achieve mission capable readiness goals, the admirals also had a chance to personally recognize members of the NAVSUP WSS team.

Morning briefing sessions included the focus on NAVSUP WSS’s Reform efforts, the Navy Sustainment System and strategic agreements and engagements with the commercial industrial base to increase warfighter readiness.  After an overview brief, the admirals joined the F-18 IWST team for a photo opportunity on the front lawn of Building 1, Naval Support Activity Philadelphia.  Standing in front of the F/A-18 aircraft, the admirals presented coins to five IWST team members who demonstrated exemplary performance and support to the F-18 Program Office and to its fleet customers.

The F/A-18, subject of readiness and mission capable rate challenges, was the focal point for the day, but the Air Boss emphasized the readiness efforts for all naval aircraft in a supervisory forum and question and answer session.

“We need to invest in a robust warfighting future, and this isn’t a five-year plan,” said Miller, challenging NAVSUP WSS leadership to accelerate its readiness recovery efforts. “We better ‘be there’ in 2019. So, we’re 14 days into the new year – what are we doing today? What are the things that we can do today to accelerate this recovery?  So, as I look at the critical roles that you are in and the leadership that you provide, I challenge you to infuse that sense of urgency into everything you do.”

The admirals then attended a working lunch with the F/A-18 IWST readiness cell and witnessed a demonstration of technological advances in supply chain integration to achieve the Secretary of Defense mandated 80 percent mission capable F/A-18 aircraft by the end of the fiscal year.  The demo provided a look at how NAVSUP WSS empowers item managers, using visual displays, process guides, tools and dashboards that track leading readiness indicators and “get well” dates for top F/A-18 material readiness degraders.

The NAVSUP WSS leadership team then discussed future possibilities for F/A-18 contracts, much like the H-60 Performance Based Logistics model, which leverages existing contracts and expands the comprehensive contract support for parts supply, engineering support and maintenance to achieve readiness.

At the end of the day, the NAVSUP WSS leadership team discussed Fleet Readiness Center (FRC) integration, such as the NAVSUP WSS team embedded at FRC Southwest, Naval Air Station North Island, San Diego, to help ramp up material management support, and the plan to expand NAVSUP WSS’s end-to-end integrator role.

The visit sent a clear message: Navy leadership is listening, they are determined in a sense of urgency and they want to help NAVSUP WSS achieve its goals in the readiness recovery effort.
