JOINT BASE SAN ANTONIO – The U.S. Army Surgeon General hosted retired medical senior leaders for a conference at Joint Base Fort Sam Houston on Jan. 29. The Retired Senior Leader Conference was intended to discuss the future of Army Medicine with current and retired senior leaders on topics including; the strategic environment, Military Health System (MHS) reform, and transformation of U.S. Army Medical Command (USAMEDCOM).
Army Medicine Senior Leaders received feedback from retired senior leaders on how they can assist current leadership regarding the transition and future of Army Medicine.
Lt. Gen. Nadja Y. West, the Surgeon General and Commanding General, USAMEDCOM, said, “There is so much going on in our Army today, with the transformation.”
“This is the greatest transformation that our Army has gone through since the 70s when the Army established Army Forces Command and TRADOC. Now we have the four-star Army Futures Command and the transformation of Army Medicine which is pretty phenomenal,” said West.
The conference included former Army Surgeons General; Maj. Gen. (Ret) Dr. Kevin Kiley, Lt. Gen. (Ret) Quinn Becker, Lt. Gen. (Ret) Ronald R. Blanck, and Lt. Gen. (Ret) Eric Schoomaker.
Current Army Medicine leadership in attendance included; Maj. Gen. Jeffrey Clark, Deputy Commanding General (Operations)/Chief, Medical Corps, Maj. Gen. Scott Dingle, Deputy Surgeon General and Deputy Commanding General (Support), and MEDCOM Command Sgt. Maj. Michael Gragg.
“We’re moving forward, it’s a time of shock and uncertainty but it’s also exciting. What excites me the most, is we are drawing up new techniques of clearing the battlefield that have never been done before, we have young people who are looking at this blank sheet of paper and looking to invent new ways of doing things,” said West.
“We would like [retired senior leaders] input on how we move forward to make sure Army Medicine stays the premiere organization that we have been since 1775. Those points of view and experience can make this transformation more successful,” said West.
Other conference attendees included; Maj. Gen. (Ret) Richard Cameron, Maj. Gen. (Ret) Joseph Caravalho, Maj. Gen. (Ret) Kenneth Farmer, Maj. Gen. (Ret) Carla Hawley-Bowland, Maj. Gen.
