Leadership changes happened at the 114th Fighter Wing this month. The Airmen of the South Dakota Air National Guard now have a new vice commander.

Col. Mark Morrell, former 114th Operations Group commander, assumed the role of 114th Vice Commander Feb. 1st, 2019, replacing Col. Quenten Esser, former 114th Fighter Wing vice commander, who recently retired.

“The role of the vice commander is a unique one because it makes you step out of your comfort zone,” said Esser.

Morrell’s biggest role is to support the wing commander and make sure his vision is carried out. He will also provide guidance to the commander when needed.

The commander has an immense amount of information thrown at him daily, and the vice commander is there to provide any additional input or assistance that he might need or have missed.  The commander’s decision is always final, but it’s the vice commander’s job to help ensure that nothing is missed.

Morrell interacted and helped Airmen in the operations and maintenance groups as the 114th Operations Group commander and pilot. With his new role, he will meet new Airmen from various groups in the South Dakota Air National Guard where he will be able to provide them mentorship, guidance, or assistance when needed.

With his ability to lead, and passion for taking care of Airmen, Esser believes Morrell will do well as the vice commander.

“He cares deeply about the men and women of the 114th FW, and will do everything he can to make sure they succeed. To me, that is the most important leadership trait he possesses as he expands his role in the South Dakota Air National Guard,” said Esser.
