VIRGINIA BEACH, Va. – Rear Adm. Brian J. Brakke, commander, Navy Expeditionary Combat Command (NECC) hosted a Navy Explosive Ordnance Disposal (EOD) Captains Training Symposium in Virginia Beach Feb. 12 - 14.
Navy-wide senior EOD leadership gathered for the three-day conference with Brakke, the Navy EOD community’s senior-ranking officer, to discuss community programs, progress and initiatives.
“It’s important to gather together at the table face-to-face,” said Brakke. “Aligning our focus as leaders is key to the health and success of our community.”
The first day’s focus was on fighting power. Beginning with detailer briefs, the day’s schedule covered the Scalable Mobile Applications and Ready Training or SMART Initiative, and the Jet Stream Program, both ways to optimize student academic performance and staff training processes through mobile capabilities and technology currently being tested at the Naval Explosive Ordnance Disposal School. Additional topics focused on human performance, destructive behaviors, resiliency and culture. Brakke led the final session of the day with a discussion of the Navy EOD Leadership Development Continuum.
The second day’s theme was combat power, discussing task force operations, mine countermeasures tactics, diving systems and other emerging technologies being applied to unmanned systems on the ground and in the water, as well as Navy EOD support to other Navy and Joint warfare areas.
The final day focused on combat effectiveness which involved a review of 2018 operational achievements and a discussion of capability gaps and seams. Rear Adm. Joseph A. DiGuardo, deputy director of plans and policy for countering weapons of mass destruction (CWMD) at U.S. Special Operations Command also spoke about new counter proliferation and CWMD initiatives. Brakke brought the symposium to a close with his 2019 commander’s guidance.
This year’s symposium was organized by Capt. JeffMcCauley, NECC assistant chief of staff for Training & Readiness and Force Diving Officer.
“Our expectation is that all of us leaders depart from here with renewed clarity and intent to move the EOD Force from where we are and toward where the Navy needs it to be,” said McCauley, “and that we’ll take this to continue the forward momentum of our Sailors.”
