    2CR recognizes Black History Month

    VILSECK, BAYERN, GERMANY

    02.17.2019

    Story by Sgt. LaShic Patterson

    2d Cavalry Regiment

VILSECK, Germany – 2d Cavalry Regiment Soldiers came together for a digital media project in honor of Black History Month at the Field Artillery Squadron conference room Vilseck, Germany, Feb. 6 & 13, 2019. In support of the 2CR strategic messaging calendar and the Army Digital Media Division, selected Soldiers shared their thoughts on the importance of Black History Month in their individual interviews.

2CR participants in the project were of all races, ethnicities, ranks and genders, highlighting that black history is American history. This project included Pfc. Patricia Shannon, Pfc. Christionne Marsh, Sgt. Derek Hornsby, 1st Lt. John Baisley, Sgt. Karen Narvaez and 1st Lt. Courtney Bunn from the FA Squadron, 2CR and 1st Lt. Tyler McKinney and Sgt. Amy Johnson Garcia from the Regimental Support Squadron, 2CR.

“Black History Month is important to me because it is an incredibly important time to reflect on the strides that have been made and the progress that still has to be made,” said Baisley. “Black history to me means understanding the struggles and obstacles that my black friends have to overcome and where it has systemically rooted itself from and what can be done about it going forward.”

Participants not only shared their thoughts on the importance of Black History Month and what black history in its totality means to them but also shared the literature, films, trivia and activities that they plan to partake in to celebrate the month.

“As a family tradition, my grandmother would give us quotes, and we would have all day to figure out who the quote came from,” said Shannon, who also elaborated on the father of black history. “The person who inspires me the most would be Carter G. Woodson. I think it’s very inspirational how somebody could just stand up and say, ‘Hey, let’s recognize African Americans and our culture doing great things.’”

In February 1926, Woodson, a historian, author and journalist, created “Negro History Week,” the precursor to what is now Black History Month. 2CR Soldiers concluded by speaking on the array of African Americans who inspire them, to include Sgt. 1st Class Edward Carter, Maya Angelou, Lebron James, Michelle Obama, family members and even service members standing with them in everyday formations.

“It’s easy to identify people in black history who are famous, but to be honest, I’m more inspired by the people to my right and left who choose to serve for a country who didn’t once accept them,” said Bunn.
