REDSTONE ARSENAL, Ala. (Feb. 20, 2019) – The U.S. Army Combat Capabilities Development Command Aviation & Missile Center has an established partnership intermediary agreement with FirePoint, an initiative at Wichita State University.
The PIA allows facilitation of cooperative activities, like workshops, to collaborate with educational institutions, academic researchers, and industry partners. Partnerships like these help further develop and transfer new and emerging technology in support of transitioning innovative technologies and capabilities into the hands of the Warfighter. As one of the Army’s top priorities, modernization efforts require commercial innovation and cutting-edge science and technology.
“[The CCDC Aviation & Missile Center’s] partnership intermediary agreement with FirePoint helps the center engage with traditional government stakeholders and non-traditional experts from academia and small business organizations to increase the likelihood of success of accelerating technology solutions to the Warfighter,” said Larry Smith, PIA program manager.
The CCDC Aviation & Missile Center’s Systems Simulation, Software & Integration Directorate hosted a multi-core processor qualification solutions workshop in late 2018 with a goal of bringing together individuals with similar experience for safety critical applications. S3I partnered with FirePoint to bring the workshop to life.
“Identifying and mitigating numerous risk elements associated with the introduction of [multi-core processors] into Army aviation systems is a significant challenge,” said Josh McNeil, the software airworthiness division chief for S3I. “The MCP solutions workshop was a success as it brought together stakeholders from the [Federal Aviation Administration] and other DoD services, industry experts, and academic researchers across the country to discuss the risk areas and solutions to the challenge.”
More than 100 people attended the two-day collaborative workshop. “An emerging outcome of this workshop is the formation of a new community of interest focused on certification requirements, standards development, and implementation guidance for MCPs used in safety-critical applications,” said McNeil.
“FirePoint is pleased to partner with [the CCDC Aviation & Missile Center] on bringing together this community of interest to work this important problem,” said Peter Perna, FirePoint executive director. “Airworthiness qualification of multi-core processors is a challenge shared not just by our military, but by general and commercial aviation as well. We’re looking forward to continuing our work to support [the center’s] leadership in this arena.”
