PACIFIC OCEAN -- Sailors and Marines aboard the Harpers Ferry-class amphibious dock landing ship USS Harpers Ferry (LSD 49) participated in a steel beach picnic on the ship’s boat deck Feb. 16.
The cookout, historically referred to as a steel beach picnic by the U.S. Navy, was hosted by the ship’s First Class Petty Officer Association as a way to help boost morale and give the Sailors on board a break from daily operations.
The First Class Petty Officer along with help from Sailors from Supply Department fired up the grills to cook and serve hamburgers, hot dogs, pasta, sodas and cookies for the entire crew.
“I think the cookout was a great way to get everyone outside to enjoy the fresh air, get some sun and enjoy some delicious food,” said Yeoman 1st Class Nathaniel Creary, from Miami, Florida.
For some Sailors and Marines, the cookout provided just the right atmosphere to socialize with friends and relax.
“It was nice being able to take a break and enjoy some good food with friends for a little bit,” said Fire Controlman 2nd Class Cynthia Quiroz, from Stockton, California. “These always give me something to look forward to.”
The First Class Petty Officer Association grilled about 160 pounds of burgers and about 100 pounds of hotdogs.
Harpers Ferry is underway conducting routine operations as a part of USS Boxer Amphibious Ready Group (ARG) consisting of the amphibious assault ship USS Boxer (LHD 4) and the amphibious transport dock ship USS John P. Murtha (LPD 26) in the eastern Pacific Ocean.
