The Installation Management Command (IMCOM) is renovating and modernizing the base’s main fitness facility and adding a functional fitness center to meet the needs of the military. IMCOM’s mission is to manage base operations and provide services and programs to enhance community life, foster readiness, promote mental and physical fitness and deliver a quality living and working environment.
The main fitness center currently consists of a variety of equipment including free weights, squat racks, and bench presses. Cardio machines run along the outside of the basketball court in hopes that it will not interfere with an ongoing game.
The Morale, Welfare and Recreation team is currently taking lead of the renovation and with the help of contractors. A facility once served as a movie theater will be converted to the new functional fitness center.
Adding a functional fitness center will be very beneficial for the multinational service members who will be participating in the upcoming joint training exercises.
“We want to make it serviceable for the units on ground,” said U.S. Army Lt. Col. Christopher M. Marquez, Garrison commander of MK and Novo Selo Training Area, Bulgaria. “This is really going to meet the needs of the rotational forces here.”
U.S. Army rotational units here will also use this as an opportunity to train for the new Army Combat Fitness test which will be implemented fiscal year 2020.
“The facilities will have all things that required for you to train for the Army Combat Fitness test” said Marquez.
Physical fitness is a critical aspect in preparation for a mission and having functional equipment to train on helps build readiness and boosts morale.
“This is going to be instrumental for anyone preparing to the upcoming ACFT.” said U.S. Army Sgt. 1st Class Edwin Mancini, platoon sergeant of 1st Platoon, Company C, 1st Battalion, 16th Infantry Regiment, 1st Armored Brigade Combat Team, 1st Infantry Division out of Fort Riley Kansas.
The 1-16, who is deployed throughout eastern Europe in support of Atlantic Resolve, will be one of many units utilizing the facilities once it is complete.
Mancini, from Wolcott, Conn., and former assistant gym instructor, believes that this renovation will be not only benefit his troops but to everyone using the facilities.
“I think this renovation is going to be a huge asset to anyone stationed here.”
As renovations continue, IMCOM will continue to provide the best services possible to all personnel stationed here.
