Nearly 100 Soldiers and family members attended, participated during the 3rd Annual Armed Forces Network Bavaria Rock N' Bowl Challenge at the Rose Barracks Bowling Center, Vilseck, Germany, Feb. 22, 2019.

The event was broadcast live on the AFN Bavaria network bringing Soldiers, their families and the AFN radio personalities closer together.

"It was a collaboration with the bowling alley," said U.S. Army Staff Sgt. Prax "Pragmatic" Pineda, an AFN radio personality.

The AFN team started their remote-live broadcast at 4 p.m. The technicians quickly set up the microphones and broadcast equipment. Pineda and fellow radio personality, U.S. Army Sgt. Justin "Jmac" McClarran, rehearsed scripts before opening the show.

"Remotes (live broadcast) draw the community in," said Lisa Greco, U.S. Army Garrison Bavaria Family and Morale, Welfare and Recreation marketing specialist. "We (the USAG Bavaria community) are spread out and we depend on them (AFN Bavaria) getting the word out."

The doors opened as the broadcast began. Parents toddlers, children, families and Soldiers streamed in before the competition. Handshakes and hugs abound as friends greeted each other. The AFN radio personalities interviewed participants and encouraged more come out.

"It's great to see them (AFN Bavaria radio personalities) walk up and interact with the crowd," Greco said.

The rules are simple bowl three games with a team of four bowlers and if they score higher than the AFN team, then the game is free. The single highest scoring team members each received a free bowling ball.

"We are here to promote the sport of bowling and provide Soldiers and members of the community the means to relax," said Robert Adams, business manager for Rose Barracks Bowling Center.
The competition began as teams bowled their first frame of the match. Music from the ongoing AFN broadcast blares over speakers blending with the shouts, giggles and laughs of the contestants.
The AFN team scored 1,461 points as 18 teams tried to beat their score. There was a steady rhythm of the thud of bowling balls, the low rumble as they roll down the alley and the sharp crack of falling pins.

Two hours later the competition ends. Scores were tallied and winners announced. The team Grumpy Old Dudes, scoring 2,186 points, earned first place and a new bowling ball for each team member. The Misfits, scoring 1,944 points, were second place and Del Fuegos, scoring 1,913, for third place.
