PACIFIC OCEAN – Sailors and Marines aboard the San Antonio-class amphibious transport dock ship USS John P. Murtha (LPD 26) are preparing for their upcoming deployment by learning to combine their individual skills to complete ship, strike group and Marine missions.

As part of the Boxer Amphibious Ready Group (ARG), John P. Murtha Sailors and the Marines of the 11th Marine Expeditionary Unit (MEU) are using their current at-sea time to further interoperability aboard the ship and within the ARG.

“The ability to integrate with our sister services is one of the fundamentals that makes the U.S. military the best in the world,” said Capt. Anthony Roach, commanding officer of John P. Murtha. “Bringing combat and/or “soft” power to bear anywhere in the world continues to demonstrate our resolve to our partner nations. Without that integration and ability to answer the call worldwide we couldn’t be the leaders of the international community that the world expects from us.”
From daily flight operations to replenishments-at-sea, the Sailors and Marines find themselves working hand-in-hand, ensuring success in each task.

“We always have areas that we can improve upon but the key take-away is the relationships and trust that we’re building between the Sailors and Marines,” said Roach. “Fostering and nurturing those good relationships now in training will facilitate accurate and efficient response when needed, whether that’s in combat or during a potential humanitarian assistance mission. The relationships built this winter and spring will carry us through to success whatever deployment brings.”

Sailors and Marines also benefit from the integration by getting hands-on experience with new equipment in a different environment.
John P. Murtha is underway conducting routine operations as a part of USS Boxer Amphibious Ready Group (ARG) in the eastern Pacific Ocean.
