Putting their arms forward as the ‘2019 Go Red’ month ended, employees of the Columbia VA Health Care System and members of the surrounding community came forward to donate their share of the life-saving plasma during the American Red Cross Blood Drive, Feb. 27, at the Wm. Jennings Bryan Dorn VA Medical Center, coming close to meeting their goal.
Yvette Twum-Danso, an assistant nurse manager at Dorn, expressed her sentiments about the drive and those who gave. “There is a shortage around the nation of blood, and we just wanted to do our part to put a dent in it,” Twum-Danso said. “I appreciate all those on our staff and friends of the community who came in to make their sacrifice, which will help save the life of either a Veteran or someone else in need blood.”
The blood drive is held several times during the year, Twum-Danso noted. Individuals who were unable to make it by the close of the drive can mark their calendars for the next one scheduled for May.
Anyone interested in giving blood can go to the American Red Cross website to make sure they meet the qualifications required to donate.
“This is the right thing to do,” Monica Newell, Dorn’s payroll supervisor said. This is the third time Newell has donated at this facility. “I gladly give blood to help save lives,” Newell added.
