U.S. Marine Corps Cpl. Mahsa Owji is an administrative specialist assigned to Headquarters and Headquarters Squadron, Marine Corps Air Station Cherry Point, North Carolina.
According to Owji, the 0111 military occupational field is a demanding job that serves as a vital asset for all military installations.
An administrative specialist deals with documentation that can range anywhere from meritorious promotions and noncommissioned officer boards to nonjudicial punishments and separations from the Corps. They ensure each Marine receives the proper pay and awards and recognition to keep the mission going.
“You can have various jobs within the 0111 [occupational specialty], it just depends on where you are,” said Owji, 21, from Olathe, Kansas. “It also depends on your duty station or your section, whether you’re assigned the (Installation Personnel Administration Center) or (Section one).”
Owji states that IPAC is broken down into sections like customer service, separations, and deployments whereas the S-1 deals with general administration.
“There is no set work load for the day,” said Owji. “I usually write a to-do list the day before of what needs to get done and that is going to be priority over the jobs that come through the door.”
In the Marine Corps, the personnel and administration occupational field is one of the largest with approximately 6,000 active duty Marines currently in the military occupational specialty.
“When it comes to being a 0111, you have to be a top-notch Marine because it is a very competitive MOS,” said Owji.
The personnel and administration occupational field is one of the many demanding jobs in the Corps that aids in mission accomplishment.
