Lieutenant Colonel John Keeler, 104th Fighter Wing executive officer, spent time at the University of Massachusetts Amherst on Feb. 22, 2019, leading lectures, discussions and exercises with Air Force ROTC cadets from Detachment 370.
The experience is beneficial to both the 104 FW and the Air Force ROTC cadets, who get a different perspective having a guest instructor.
“Lieutenant Colonel Keeler has a wealth of knowledge, and it’s great having someone who’s a UMass graduate with such vast experience in teaching,” said Lt. Col. Mark Guerber, Det. 370 commander.
Having an outside perspective helps the cadets develop a wider set of leadership skills, said Victoria King, UMass Amherst Air Force ROTC cadet.
“Having guidance from someone who is very much in the Air Force is great,” said King. “Especially someone like Lt. Col. Keeler who works directly with the commander.”
When the UMass Amherst Air Force ROTC program needed someone to fill in as an instructor, Lt. Col. Keeler, a Det. 370 alumni, was glad to do it.
Keeler said the most rewarding part for him was being able to help the cadets prepare for their futures. He showed them how they can apply their majors in the Air Force and carry their skill sets over into civilian careers.
“Communication is vital as Air Force officers,” said Keeler. “In today’s Air Force everything is about the Total Force, ROTC is a part of that.”
