The Iowa National Guard, in conjunction with the National Guard Sustainment Training Center (STC) located at Camp Dodge Joint Maneuver Training Center (CDJMTC), hosted Soldiers from several Balkan countries to share best practices and lessons learned in an effort to enhance Humvee maintenance programs across the region.
“Events like this establish relationships across those countries and leverage security cooperation programs to enhance regional stability,” said Lt. Col. Jeff Erickson, director of the Iowa National Guard’s State Partnership Program.
Teams from Kosovo, Albania, North Macedonia, Croatia, Slovenia, Bosnia and Herzegovina, along with their National Guard partners from the states of Iowa, Maryland, Minnesota, New Jersey, Colorado and Ohio, traveled to CDJMTC for this weeklong course at the STC where they discussed ways to improve Humvee maintenance programs, maintain and order spare parts, and certify driver licensing and operational requirements.
The STC is a one of a kind facility that provides collective technical and tactical training and evaluations for sustainment units supporting land operations. The center provides subject matter experts to teach and mentor Soldiers in accordance with the Army combat arms training strategy. The four acre STC campus, which includes 48 heated maintenance bays with heavy lift capabilities, trains Active Duty, Reserve and National Guard sustainment units from across the United States.
Chief Warrant Officer 3 Dustin Hunter, the STC senior warrant officer, said this course is important because it provides partner countries with the necessary materials to enhance their sustainment programs while at the same time giving them reach back capabilities to the STC as they develop their maintenance teams.
The conference is part of the National Guard’s State Partnership Program, which is a Department of Defense joint security cooperation program matching a state’s National Guard with a partner country in order to promote mutually beneficial security and enduring relationships with allies and friendly nations.
“From a logistician and maintenance perspective this program is very important and more engaging for future maintenance on the Humvee,” said Maj. Bekim Haliti, the Kosovo Security Force (KSF) Operational Support Brigade logistics officer. The KSF is currently fielding Humvees and is in the early stages of developing its program to maintain these vehicles long into the future.
The National Guard Soldiers and their Balkan counterparts participating in the course agree that a regional approach is a step in the right direction as they work to improve their Humvee maintenance programs.
