The North Carolina Department of Motor Vehicles Full Service recreational vehicle has been operating on Marine Corps Base Camp Lejeune for authorized personnel and their families since April of 2018. The DMV RV will be departing mid-March for scheduled maintenance but will return to the installation in time for April appointments.
The Department of Homeland Security (DHS) announced on December 20, 2013 a phased enforcement plan for the REAL ID Act, as passed by Congress that will implement the act in a measured, fair and responsible way.
By October 2020, it will be a requirement to have a REAL ID to access all federal facilities and airports. The full-service RV on MCB Camp Lejeune provides assistance in distributing North Carolina REAL IDs to members of the installation and retired service members.
To be eligible to apply for REAL ID in North Carolina you must be able to prove your full name, date of birth, social security number, legal presence and North Carolina residency. If you have just moved to North Carolina, you can apply as long as you have proof of your North Carolina address, such as utility bills, a rental agreement or your vehicle registration card.
The cost for a REAL ID is the same as a regular or duplicate driver license or ID. However, if you already have a valid driver’s license or ID and want to upgrade to a REAL ID, the fee is $13. All fees can be paid via cash, check and credit or debit card.
After you have submitted your documentation, taken a new photo and paid the fee, your REAL ID will be mailed to you in approximately 15-20 days.
The REAL ID Act does not affect Marine Corps installation access for individuals who already possess an approved-access credential, such as a DoD identification card or Defense Biological Identification credential.
When the DMV RV returns, personnel with base access will be able to obtain a North Carolina REAL ID at the DMV RV, located at the Hadnot Point Plaza parking lot near the corner of Holcomb Blvd. and Molly Pitcher Drive. Appointments are required and will be available Tuesday, Wednesday and Thursday of the first full week of each month from 8 - 11 a.m. and noon - 5 p.m. Appointments should take approximately 20 minutes and can be scheduled online at www.lejeune.marines.mil/realid
