Capt. Chris Slattery, Commander, Naval Information Warfare Training Group (NIWTG) and Commanding Officer of IWTG Norfolk, was relieved by Capt. Edwin Grohe in a ceremony Feb. 22 at Vista Point, Naval Station Norfolk, Norfolk, Virginia.
“The synergy of intelligence, information and weapons systems in order to realize the full potential of our capabilities as a Fleet is paramount to our warfighters operating forward, executing the missions across all domains and in contested and denied environments around the globe,” said officiating officer and guest speaker, Vice Adm. Brian Brown, commander, Naval Information Forces, while addressing the IWTG team. “Information Warfare Training Group Norfolk is at the forefront of this effort.”
Slattery assumed command as Commander, Task Force 1030/Commanding Officer, Navy Information Operations Command (NIOC) Norfolk, Va., in July 2017. In March 2018, NIOC Norfolk was officially renamed during a ribbon cutting ceremony where Slattery became the first Commander of NIWTG and Commanding Officer, IWTG Norfolk. He is credited with organizing and leading the IWTG headquarters and subordinate commands at IWTG San Diego and IWTG Gulfport defining, developing and training Information Operations (IO) to achieve strategic effects for our National Defense.
“Over the past 18 months, IWTG attained unprecedented levels of success and set the standard of excellence for Fleet Cyber Operations, Electronic Warfare (EW) and Cryptologic (CRY) training support. We’ve established the Navy as a leader in information warfighting within the Department of Defense,” Slattery said. “We were also able to establish the Training and Assist Visit Team (TAV) mission and 30 Computer Network Trainer Classes.”
A native of Vermont, Slattery graduated and was commissioned in 1994 from the U.S. Naval Academy and subsequently graduated from the Naval Postgraduate School in 2001. He was originally a Surface Warfare Officer and re-designated in 2001 to Special Duty Officer (cryptology), now Cryptologic Warfare Officer in the Navy’s Information Warfare Community.
In his next assignment, Slattery will serve on the staff of Commander, Second Fleet.
Grohe, a native of Milford, Conn., graduated from the United States Naval Academy in 1993 with a Bachelor of Science in Aerospace Engineering. He was designated a Naval Aviator in November 1995 and joined the Electronic Attack community as an EA-6B pilot. He served as the Deputy Chief of Future Operations at U.S. Cyber Command and led a joint-interagency operational planning team prior to becoming the Deputy Commander, Task Force 1030/Executive Officer, NIOC Norfolk in August 2017. When NIOC Norfolk was officially renamed in March 2018, Grohe became the first Deputy Commander of NIWTG and Executive Officer, IWTG Norfolk.
Grohe said he feels extraordinarily privileged to lead the IWTG team throughout the formidable challenges ahead.
“Our focus will be ensuring delivery of relevant, consequential and value-added Information Warfare capabilities to our fleet,” Grohe said. “We will measure our success by the development of a highly skilled, adaptable and capable workforce, and in equipping those professionals with reliable, sustainable, and fully interoperable networks, systems, capabilities and processes.”
The ceremony concluded with a cake cutting and an opportunity to farewell Slattery and welcome Grohe.
