The NATO Military Committee, NATO’s senior military authority, joined Commander, U.S. 2nd Fleet (C2F), Vice Adm. Andrew Lewis, aboard Nimitz-class aircraft carrier USS Harry S. Truman (CVN 75) March 12 to better understand the future of U.S. Navy operations.
“The military committee, which is a group of 29 National military representatives of general officer and flag officer rank, understands the capability that is provided by Harry S. Truman,” said Chairman of the NATO Military Committee, Air Chief Marshal Sir Stuart Peach. “Recently this great ship served in support of the great alliance in the seas off the coast of Norway. It has been very successful. It has been [great] to see the professional quality of the ship’s company and the capability represented has been very important to the military committee.”
Lewis and USS Harry S. Truman Commanding Officer, Capt. Nick Dienna, briefed the committee in the ship’s hangar bay, answering questions about C2F’s role in maritime operations as well as Truman’s recent, historic deployment – the first ever utilizing the Dynamic Force Employment model. Additionally, Lewis and Dienna provided a tour of the ship and hosted a dinner reception.

“It is a great honor and privilege for the military committee of NATO to visit this great ship, Harry S. Truman,” added Peach. “The ship’s company should be very proud of their achievements, and I think it’s true to say the ship’s company, following their assignment in support of the alliance, are now all great ambassadors for NATO.”
The NATO Military Committee is the oldest permanent body in NATO after the North Atlantic Council. It is the primary source of military advice to the North Atlantic Council and the Nuclear Planning Group, and gives direction to the two Strategic Commanders.
