The All-Marine Wrestling team hosted the Lejeune Open wrestling tournament March 16 at the Goettge Memorial Field House on Marine Corps Base Camp Lejeune. The tournament was open to active-duty Marines and Sailors to come out and compete.
“It’s been about two years since I’ve been on the (wrestling) scene,” said Lance Cpl. Erik Aviladominguez, support equipment electrician, 2nd Marine Air Wing. “Getting back into the competition was definitely good.”
With the invitation open to Marines and Sailors, members of the All-Marine Wrestling team participated in the tournament as well.
“Today I came out and put forth my best effort and I came out on top,” said Cpl. Arthur Walthour, a firefighting and rescue specialist stationed at Marine Corps Air Station New River. “It feels good to be out here competing for the Marine Corps wrestling team. I have one of the best coaches in the world who puts forth a lot of his best effort out there.”
For the first time in the history of the Lejeune Open, two female wrestlers competed in the 150-157 pound weight class.
“I did an exhibition match with another female here,” said 2nd Lt. Stephanie Simon, platoon commander, 2nd Amphibious Assault Battalion, 2nd Marine Division. “I guess we were the first two females to ever wrestle in the Lejeune Open. I didn’t expect too many people to be here, but there was a big turnout.”
