Approximately 20 U.S. Army Reserve soldiers are scheduled to compete in a division-level Best Warrior Competition, Mar. 24 to 27, at Camp Williams and Fort Douglas, Utah. The soldiers represent various units in Utah, Montana, Wyoming, Washington and Idaho.
The competition, hosted by the 96th Sustainment Brigade of Salt Lake City, will measure individual soldier’s ability to perform a fitness test, land navigation, weapons qualification, orally test military history and regulations before a board of leaders, a written essay, a 6-mile road march with a 35-lbs. ruck sack, one-on-one combatives, and multiple mystery events. Mystery events are unannounced warrior tasks and drills aimed to catch soldiers off-guard throughout the competition, and may include reacting to direct fire, responding to casualties, clearing a building or others.
The top scoring soldiers will move forward to compete at theater level, with winners from that moving on to an Army Reserve-wide competition. Last year, two Utah Reserve soldiers with the 786th Quartermaster Company of Provo, Utah, Sgt. James Southard and Spc. Camden Ewell, advanced to the Army Reserve Best Warrior Competition, with Southard taking second place overall nationally.
Local media is invited to attend any portion of the competition after contacting the hosting unit. To coordinate coverage, please contact Sgt. Kayla F. Benson, 96th Sustainment Brigade public affairs sergeant, at kayla.f.benson.mil@mail.mil. The event schedule and other pertinent information will be released after RSVP’ing.
