CAMP SCHWAB, OKINAWA, Japan—Members of the U.S. and local communities attended the 2019 Schwab Festival March 23-24, on Camp Schwab.

The two-day event gave attendees a chance to relax and enjoy music, games and food together.

"As the residents of the 11th Residential Section of Henoko District, we, the Marines and Sailors of Camp Schwab, were honored to host Schwab Fest this past weekend,” said Col. Jason Perry, the camp commander of Camp Schwab. “The citizens of Henoko have been so welcoming of us at their local events, the Henoko Tug-of-War and Hari Boat Races to name a few, that it was a great opportunity to return the hospitality by opening the base for the weekend, enjoying great food, games and music. These events continue to strengthen our participation as a part of Henoko and are reflective of our strong U.S.-Japan Alliance."

Activities for all ages were available. A rock climbing wall, trampolines and more were part of Fun Land for children. U.S. Marines and members of the Japan Ground Self-Defense Force displayed vehicles and aircraft for the public to view and interact with.

“It was important to let Okinawa residents onto our base because we want to show them what we do on a daily basis,” said Cpl. Samuel Thompson, the noncommissioned officer in charge for Camp Schwab camp operations. “The event was a huge success. Everybody had fun and it was very energetic.”

Entertainment included traditional Okinawa dancing, hip hop, and live entertainment with Halestorm and Frankie Ballard as the headline performances.

“We have done a lot of military base shows in Japan, and the service members always treat us so well,” said Arejay Hale, the drummer and percussionist for Halestorm. “We get to see, first hand, the sacrifice that these men and women make. This is our way to help and bring home to them. We always say, ‘You guys are rock stars to us.'"
