The Georgia National Guard celebrated services and sacrifices of military and civilian women during the Women’s History Month Observance at Clay National Guard Center, Marietta, Georgia on Mar. 27, 2019.

“Today we celebrate success,” said, Maj. Gen. Thomas Carden, Adjutant General Georgia National Guard. “It’s very important that we celebrate success because those who don’t do it have less success to celebrate.”

The observance featured two notable presenters, Chief Master Sgt. Lynda Washington, incoming Georgia Air National Guard State Command Chief and current superintendent of the Warner Robins based 116th Operations Group, and retired Col. Laura Strange, former chief nurse for the Georgia Army National Guard.

Washington modestly shared her extensive history of service in the Air Force. During her tenure, she has served in many different positions and has continuously challenged the military’s gender roles.

“For the first 13 years of my career I never saw a female chief master sergeant,” said Washington. “Thank you to the women who prepared the path before me, opening doors and breaking down barriers so that my journey was easier than theirs.”

Washington also challenged the younger generation of female Guardsman in attendance to set goals and put the work in to attain those goals. She warned that the wait is not always easy, but anything is attainable in a new Air Force and Army.

Retired Col. Strange spoke of the history and challenges women have faced in the military dating back to the Revolutionary War. She recognized the progression of service and roles that women took on throughout the United States military history.

“We celebrate countless women whose courage and resolve have contributed to character and success of our nation and the entire world,” said retired Maj. Maria Dickerson, during the presidential proclamation for Women’s History Month Observance. “The equal opportunity of women in every day life is an essential feature of a free and prosperous society.”
