PENSACOLA, Fla. (NNS) -- Capt. Leslie Kindling relieved Capt. Dan Patterson as officer in charge (OIC) of Naval Survival Training Institute (NSTI) during a change of charge ceremony at the National Naval Aviation Museum on board Naval Air Station Pensacola (NASP) March 27.

Patterson assumed the duties as OIC in May 2016 and worked to ensure NSTI Sailors practiced safety, leadership, training, and teamwork.

“We’ve been through a lot,” said Patterson. “This is three years which I will never forget.”

Patterson’s next assignment will be instructing at the United States Naval Academy.

NSTI’s mission is to provide safe, effective, and relevant aviation survival and human performance training as the execution arm of the Chief of Naval Operations-mandated Naval Aviation Survival Training Program (NASTP). The focus of this training is to enhance the operational readiness of the joint warfighter, to include designated aviators and aircrew (joint and allied), student aviators and aircrew (joint and allied), contract pilots, selected passengers, project specialists, VIPs, and USMC non-aircrew.

Naval aviation survival training emphasizes mishap and accident prevention, enhancing and sustaining performance, and mishap survival. NSTI strives to provide the most up-to-date, operationally relevant training possible.

Capt. Theron Toole, commanding officer of Navy Medicine Operational Training Center (NMOTC), NSTI’s parent command, served as the guest speaker for the ceremony.

“There’s a lot that goes into successfully navigating the job of an officer in charge,” said Toole. “I can’t say enough how proud and grateful I am to have had the opportunity to serve with Capt. Patterson.”

Toole presented the Meritorious Service Medal to Patterson following his remarks.

Kindling read her orders and assumed responsibilities as OIC before addressing the guests in attendance and her new crew of officers, enlisted Sailors, and civilians.

“I am honored and humbled by this opportunity to work with you,” said Kindling. “I have started to get to know you and look forward to learning more about you as individuals and as a team over the course of our assignment together.”

NSTI and NMOTC provide operational medical and aviation survival training. Both are part of the network of Navy Medicine professionals who support Sailors and Marines worldwide, providing critical mission support aboard ships, in the air, under the sea, and on the battlefield.
