CAMP BUEHRING, Kuwait – Command Sgt. Maj. Samuel C. Rapp of the 3rd Armored Brigade Combat Team, 4th Infantry Division, relinquished responsibility for the Iron Brigade in a ceremony at Camp Buehring, Kuwait on Friday, March 29.

Rapp joined the 3ABCT as the senior noncommissioned officer nearly two years ago, when the brigade was partway through a rotation in Europe in support of Operation Atlantic Resolve. He relinquished responsibility approximately one month into a brigade deployment to Kuwait in support of Operation Spartan Shield.

“It’s important to take a minute to recognize what this superb leader has accomplished in the past 22 months,” said Col. Michael J. Simmering, 3ABCT Commander.

“I watched, under Command Sgt. Maj. Rapp’s direction, the [noncommissioned officers] take charge of training their Soldiers, taking pride in what they were doing, and quite honestly, setting a standard of performance for our Army that has, in my opinion, been lacking for some time.”

Simmering said that through two continents, nine countries, six brigade-level movements, and too many training events to count, Rapp helped lead the brigade “in nothing less than heroic fashion,” leaving behind a better brigade than he took on.

During the ceremony, Rapp expressed his gratitude toward the Iron Brigade, and called his relinquishment a bittersweet event.

In his speech, Rapp cited a poem that describes the “dash” in one’s life as what happens between the day he is born and the day he dies.
“I will tell you that I am extremely proud that my dash story will include that I was an Iron Soldier in the best armored brigade that you will ever find,” he said.

In Rapp’s absence, Command Sgt. Maj. Timothy Chrysler will serve as the brigade’s acting command sergeant major. The incoming senior noncommissioned officer, Command Sgt. Maj. Brian D. Haydt, will arrive to Camp Buehring to take responsibility for the brigade at a later date.
