    Story by Maj. William Carraway

    Georgia National Guard

Staff Sgt. Amber Arnold, an engine mechanic with the Savannah-based Detachment 2, Company B, 935th Aviation Support Battalion was singled out by her commander, Chief Warrant Officer 4 Duane Sandbothe, during a recent visit from senior leaders of the Georgia Army National Guard to the Georgia unit’s Kuwait base of operations.
“Arnold’s efforts have significantly improved efficiency and accountability in a very short period of time,” said Sandbothe describing Arnold’s contributions to Maj. Gen. Tom Carden, Georgia’s Adjutant General and the Commander of the Georgia Army National Guard, Brig. Gen. Randall Simmons. “She has made a tremendous impact.”
Arnold is employed fulltime at Army Aviation Support Facility in Savannah as a supply noncommissioned officer and deployed to Kuwait with the 935th last summer. With a staff of nine Soldiers, Arnold quickly went to work to solve inventory and storage issues and simplify aviation repairable turn-ins.
“Through Staff Sgt. Arnold’s diligence, attention to detail and ability to organize this large tasking, she was able to streamline ordering, movement, inventories, and cataloging of parts,” said Sandbothe. “Arnold and her staff saved the Army more than 24 million dollars.”
Arnold's team reduced the list of overage repairable items from 233 overdue items worth nearly $2 million to zero within 30 days of identifying the issue. The team also improved the layout management of parts storage. A key element of the improvement was eliminating exposure of the harsh elements to more than $30 million worth of parts. This initiative not only reduced the Army’s repair and storage expenses but significantly reduced labor hours. Through their logistical management efforts, nearly $25 million in parts were added to inventory tracking.
More than 21,000 Soldiers and Airmen of the Georgia National Guard have deployed overseas since September 11, 2001. More than 2,500 are currently deployed.
