TRZEBIEN, Poland - Soldiers from Charlie Company, 3rd Battalion, 66th Armored Regiment of the 1st Armored Brigade Combat Team, 1st Infantry Division bounds forward toward their objective during a practiced tactical movement in the forests south of Karliki, Poland on March 27, 2019.

As Soldiers from 2nd Platoon worked through their third iteration of the exercise, they diligently practiced their coordinated movements and refined their tactics to successfully clear their objective during the exercise.

Their training mission today began as the Soldiers advanced upon the objective in M3 Bradley Fighting Vehicles, and ended with the clearing of an enemy trench. The Soldiers were supervised by Observer Controller Trainers to ensure they executed their movements and tactics correctly.

“As an O.C.T., my job is to ensure the team leaders of my platoon understand what they were doing to minimize casualties,” said Ssg. Daniel Dreesen of Charlie company. “The Soldiers always have room for improvement. They can do better but, that’s why we are out here. And, since we began running through this exercise at the beginning of the week they have certainly improved, which is the whole point of doing this exercise.”

The Soldier who effectively helped lead his squad through the mission was Bravo Team leader Sgt. Kendrick Alvarez. Not only was it his mission to coordinate his team’s movements, but ensure they could practice how to clear an objective while dismounted.

“It’s important for the Soldiers to learn how to get out on foot and find a path for the Bradley’s to move through,” Said Sgt. Alvarez. “This way the vehicles don’t have trouble negotiating the difficult terrain features around here that they can’t clear without their dismounts.”

The training here in Poland offers infantry Soldiers the ability to work in different terrain than they might normally be use to back home at Fort Riley, Kansas. Today’s exercise offered the Soldiers of Charlie company the experience of working in tandem with their Bradleys to negotiate through it to successfully move to an objective.

“As dismounted infantry we need to know how to negotiate our movements through different areas.” Said, Sgt. Alvarez. “We want to make sure we know how to move not only in urban areas but through wood lines, trenches and bunkers as well. Training in a place like this helps our company and battalion know how to advance and secure footholds alongside our vehicles anywhere in the country.”
