The newly-elected San Bernardino County Supervisor for the third district Dawn Rowe reached out to Marine Corps Logistics Base Barstow, California, commanding officer Col. Craig C. Clemans, Feb 19.

Rowe talked with Clemans in his office for about half an hour.

“I loved my visit with the colonel,” she said, “and I was glad to hear of the operational aspects to increase the viability of the base and make sure it remains open.”

“Relationships are important in getting anything done within any level of government,” Rowe said, “so I wanted to establish a relationship with the colonel and have a face to face so he knows how to reach me if he has any issues with the county.”

Rowe took office in the Nov. 6, 2018, general election to fill the seat vacated by former San Bernardino County Supervisor James Ramos. He is now the assemblyman for California’s 40th assembly district.

She said her district is one of the largest in the county, encompassing MCLB Barstow as well as the Marine Corps Air Ground Combat Center 29 Palms, all of Morongo Basin, and the cities of Barstow, Big Bear Lake, Yucaipa, Highland, Loma Linda, San Bernardino, Redlands, Grand Terrace and parts of Colton.

The new supervisor has an affinity for the military in general and the Marine Corps in particular having spent 18 years as a military wife married to a Marine Corps infantry officer.

Rowe is also a Gold Star spouse. “My husband was an active duty Marine infantry officer stationed at 29 Palms with the First Battalion, Seventh Marines,” Rowe recounted. “He was on his second deployment back to Iraq in 2004 when he was killed by a roadside bomb.”

Her husband took the mustang route to become an officer. “He initially got out of the Corps as a sergeant, was promoted to staff sergeant in the Marine Corps Reserves, then reenlisted through Officer Candidate School and made it to captain,” Rowe explained. “He had been on the list to make major before he was killed in action. He was promoted posthumously to major by President (George W.) Bush.”

The supervisor was accompanied on her “getting to know you” tour by her field representative Elaine Villareal.

Col. Clemans introduced her to his staff at the weekly Command Group Meeting.

Rowe said the Marine Corps will always be a welcoming place for her.

“I feel like I’m coming home,” Rowe said. “It’s just nice to be among the Marine Corps. It’s family to me.”
