GRAFENWOEHR, Germany – 2nd Lieutenant Hannah Nehring, battalion medical officer from 1st Battalion, 16th Infantry Regiment, 1st Armored Brigade Combat Team, 1st Infantry Division earned the Expert Field Medical Badge after completing a rigorous week of testing here on April 2, 2019.

Of the 249 Soldiers who made the attempt, 2nd Lt. Nehring was one of 9 who successfully earned the renowned Army special skill badge.

“It has always been a goal of mine to earn the EFMB, and I can finally say I did it,” said 2nd Lt. Nehring. “I am thankful for the opportunity to compete because now I am in better position to train and mentor Soldiers who will compete in the future.”

The 96% attrition rate of the course was due to the physically and mentally arduous nature of the events and high evaluation standards. The events included a physical fitness test, written exam of Army medical doctrine, three combat testing lanes, land navigation, and a 12-mile ruck march.

“The most challenging part was the night land navigation,” said 2nd Lt. Nehring. “I was in some very dense undergrowth and began to doubt if I could finish, but I thought of the people who supported me during my training, and kept going.”

Among those who supported 2nd Lt. Nehring was Sergeant Major Abraham Burke, operations sergeant major from 1st Bn. 16th Inf. Regt.

“The earning of the EFMB requires total dedication and relentless pursuit,” said Sgt. Maj. Burke. “2nd Lt. Nehring is a dedicated leader who continuously challenges herself and her subordinates personally and professionally. Her commitment to training that led up to EFMB testing far surpassed that of her peers.”

Sgt. Maj. Burke went on to describe the importance of committed junior leaders in the profession of arms.

“The Army prides itself on the development of leaders, 2nd. Lt. Nehring is no exception,” he said. “The competence and dedication that she displays on a daily basis embraces the fact that she is a steward of the profession.”

2nd Lt. Nehring is currently stationed in Europe for nine months in support of the 1st ABCT, 1st Inf. Div. mission to assure U.S. allies and ensure allied forces are ready to respond to any threat.

She first considered joining the Army after eavesdropping on her brother’s conversation with a recruiter. Two years later, she commissioned as a medical services officer after graduating from Iowa State University.

2nd Lt. Nehring will spend the remainder of her rotation training and providing medical support to her unit. When asked what she looks forward to upon returning home she said, “I am looking forward to my wedding!” 2nd Lt. Nehring gets married in the spring of 2020.
