SWIETOSZOW, Poland – Cavalry Scouts assigned to 1st Squadron, 4th Cavalry Regiment, 1st Armored Brigade Combat Team, 1st Infantry Division tested the Polish terrain and honed their skills during a training exercise here, April 2-4, 2019.
The training entails a week of mounted and dismounted exercises with specific emphasis on maneuver. Today, the Scouts overcame the dense forest terrain, with concentrations of pine trees and undergrowth, while they completed their assigned missions.
“It’s beneficial to train dismounts in that type of environment,” said 1st. Lt. Tyler Zellers, platoon leader from Bravo Company, 1st Sqd. 4th Cav. Regt. “They have the ability to utilize movement techniques that exploit the concealment provided by the dense forest. At Fort Riley, that terrain is a lot harder to come by because the vegetation is more dispersed.”
In addition to movement, dense terrain presents visibility challenges, which are especially important considering that cavalry scouts are known as the eyes and ears of a commander.
“Our dismounts overcame some challenges while they were setting up observation posts,” said 1st. Lt. Zellers. “I’m pleased to see them getting repetitions out into some real terrain.”
Fundamentals and repetition are key to effectively maneuvering a dismounted formation, the time at the range in Poland has allowed 1st Lt. Tyler’s platoon to train as a team.
“On the whole, I’m really glad to have the opportunity to go through an entire movement out here on this range because the Soldiers have grown in the last few days,” said 1st Lt. Zellers. “They are taking in the concepts that we presented them and incorporated them into their training.”
Bravo company will spend the rest of the week moving into larger tactical exercises, planning and practicing their movement techniques, practicing actions on contact, and calling for indirect fire.
