MCCONNELL AIR FORCE BASE, Kan.—Members of the 22nd Air Refueling Wing Judge Advocate team at McConnell Air Force Base visited the University of Kansas Law School on April 10, 2019, to attend the hearing of a case.
Attending the hearing allowed the members of the JA team to improve their trial practice and gave them insight on the current areas of interest for cases.
“In addition to attending the hearing we engaged in discussions with faculty members and students in support of Air Force Judge Advocate General Corps efforts to get law students interested in making the Air Force JAG Corps a career,” said William Pischnotte, 22nd Air Refueling Wing attorney-advisor.
Being a JA means more than just working cases and giving legal advice. It also requires getting involved with the community to let them know what a JA does and why it’s important.
“It is important that we go out and talk to law students so that not only can we make connections, but we can also show them they have more opportunities than they may think,” said Lt. Col. Justin Silverman, 22nd ARW staff judge advocate. “We also educate them on what we do compared to a civilian court and the different challenges we face.”
Another reason it is important for JAG to reach out is due to their mission and vision.
The Air Force JAG Corps mission is to provide Airmen with the full-spectrum of legal support for mission success. Their vision is to have disciplined and legally- enabled Airmen using the law to advance the mission.
“I love going out and talking to law students,” said Silverman. “I want them to know their options and just because this isn’t a nine-to-five-job, if they are up for the challenge then they can do it too.”
Talking to students at different schools and universities benefits not only the students, but it also benefits the members of the JA team by giving them opportunities to make connections.
“The tremendous appreciation that the faculty and students of KU have for the military and how welcoming they were to us makes me excited to go back, and wish that they were closer,” said Silverman.
