TINKER AIR FORCE BASE, Okla. – The 507th Air Refueling Wing commander, Col. Miles Heaslip, handed the 507th Maintenance Group command guidon to Lt. Col. Karwin Weaver at an assumption of command ceremony here April 7, 2019.
In his address to the Reservists of the 507th ARW, Weaver expressed his excitement in taking command of the maintenance group.
“To the men and women of the 507th Maintenance Group, I’m honored and humbled to be your commander,” Weaver said. “We are an important part of the nation’s defense. With a mission such as ours, it’s going to grow and evolve. I ask you to be safe, have fun and fix tankers.”
As commander of the 507th MXG, Weaver will lead a team of more than 250 Reserve Citizen Airmen in 23 career fields assigned to the aircraft maintenance and maintenance Squadrons, as well as maintenance operations and quality assurance sections.
Weaver is responsible for personnel, aircraft and equipment readiness in support of United States Strategic Command’s mission and conventional world-wide air refueling taskings.
Weaver commanded four maintenance squadrons prior to his current assignment as the 507th MXG commander: The 44th Aircraft Maintenance Squadron at Holloman Air Force Base, New Mexico, the 307th Aircraft Maintenance and Maintenance Squadrons at Barksdale Air Force Base, Louisiana, and the 944th Aircraft Maintenance Squadron at Luke Air Force Base, Arizona.
Heaslip presided over the ceremony and highlighted the importance of having close relationships with the maintenance group.
“Early on, I was taught by a group commander that your best friend in the wing is the maintenance group commander,” Heaslip said.
As a maintenance officer, Weaver has experience with five different weapon systems to include the A-10 Thunderbolt II, the B-52 Stratofortress, the F-16 Fighting Falcon, the F-22 Raptor and the F-35 Lightning II.
Heaslip also discussed the challenges and limitations of maintaining the aging KC-135 Stratotanker fleet during his speech.
“My charge to you, Col. Weaver, is to join the family,” Heaslip said. ‘We’re not going to get there without you, without your maintenance group and your leadership.”
